Is This the End of Music (as We Know It)?

With the rise of AI tools like Udio, by former Google DeepMind engineers, a question hangs heavy in the air: Is this the end of music as we know it?

Music has always been a deeply human art form, whether it’s the soulful wail of a blues guitar, the driving rhythm of a hip-hop beat, the rumble of an African drum, or the soaring crescendo of a symphony. But with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like Udio, the brainchild of former Google DeepMind engineers, a question hangs heavy in the air: Is this the end of music as we know it?

Udio and similar platforms offer a glimpse into a future where AI can analyse and generate music. These tools can generate melodies, harmonies, and even orchestration based on user input. I’ve been tinkering with Udio over the weekend, and in my opinion, it is a Sora-like moment for AI music. Imagine sketching out a chord progression and having Udio weave a tapestry of strings and brass to complement it.

Threat or Opportunity?

This technological leap presents exciting opportunities and potential threats to the traditional music industry.

Opportunities

  • Accessibility: AI tools can democratize music generation. Aspiring musicians without years of formal training can now explore sonic landscapes and bring their ideas to life.
  • Collaboration: AI can act as a creative partner, sparking inspiration and pushing boundaries for established artists. Imagine a world where Sofiya Nzau and Zerb collaborate with an AI on their next intergalactic soundscape.
  • Efficiency: Composing can be a time-consuming process. AI can help artists streamline workflows, allowing them to focus on refining their ideas and stage presence.

Threats

  • Homogenization: If everyone can access the same AI tools, will music become sterile and predictable?
  • Loss of Soul: Can AI genuinely capture the raw emotion and lived experiences that give music its power?
  • Artist Devaluation: Will audiences lose appreciation for the human element behind the music?

Beyond the Algorithm

Here’s the thing: AI isn’t here to replace musicians. It’s a tool, just like a paintbrush or a synthesizer. The human touch will always be essential. I’ve used Udio to generate three pieces of music to spark your own ponderings, each exploring a different genre. I incorporated snippets of my own poetry into the lyrics of the song. You can read some of my work on the AllPoetry network. However, if you prefer, Udio can automatically generate lyrics for you, complete with a song title. Listen closely. Do these pieces evoke emotion? Do they transport you somewhere new? I am excited to hear your thoughts!

Song Title: Echoes of the Savannah
Prompt: An epic song about Africa, beautiful orchestra voices providing the backdrop, melodic.
Descriptive genre: Female Vocalist, Pop, Art pop, Melodic, Lush, Passionate, Sentimental, Anthemic, Poetic, Orchestra.

Song Title: Savannah Serenade
Prompt: A romantic song about falling in love with Africa, starts with the dramatic roar of a lion, a choir of melodic voices sings in the background.
Descriptive genre: Regional music, African music, Melodic, Passionate, Warm, Peaceful.

Song Title: Africa Mama Rise
Prompt: A song in the style of Oliver Mtukudzi about the African dream,
Descriptive genre: Male vocalist, Rock, Regional music, African music, Melodic, Funk rock, Rhythmic, Uplifting.

How to Use Udio

To get started with this AI tool, type in a prompt and click “Create.” This will generate two unique tracks related to the prompt. Additionally, you can provide your own lyrics, create an instrumental track, or add specific genre tags to influence the generated output.

After using it over the weekend, I discovered that the most precise output can be achieved by providing a rough one-line lyric and a story to guide the text model. Then, a descriptive genre can be given to direct the music model. Udio cannot be used to copy the original works of other musicians. Still, you can ask it to generate a track in a musician’s style, as I did with Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi above—strangely, it did a reggae number! It still turned out amazingly either way!

The future of music isn’t about AI replacing musicians. It’s about embracing new tools to create a richer, more diverse, and ever-evolving soundscape. The end of music? Hardly. It’s just the beginning of a new chapter.
